Canon Syndicate content

YouTube sucks: 4 sites that do video better

YouTube may be the best known mainstream video hosting sites on the Web, but it's certainly not winning any awards for the visual quality of its content. YouTube's creators have said that higher resolution videos are on the way, but until then there are a handful of other services that do a much better job at making your uploaded video look a little less Webby.

There's another problem at hand too--size. Video files are big, and a lot of the most popular services place tedious size restrictions. Those restrictions mean you are either going to have to compress your video through third party software before uploading, or make smaller, lower quality source recordings to begin with.  read more »

Canon's new dual-Flash HD camcorder

January 9, 2008 Canon has announced its VIXIA line of consumer HD camcorders at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Headlining the act is the HF10 Dual Flash Memory camcorder, which eliminates the need for DV tape by allowing users to record up to six hours of HD video to a 16 GB internal Flash drive, plus a further 2-4 GB on removable SDHC memory cards. In addition to the HF10, the VIXIA line will include the HF100 Flash Memory camcorder, the HV30 HD camcorder and the previously released HG10 AVCHD Hard Disk Drive camcorder and HR10 AVCHD DVD camcorder. All camcorders in the VIXIA line feature a HD CMOS Image Sensor for Full HD (1920 x 1080) image capture, a DIGIC DV II Image Processor, instant AutoFocus and SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization, which corrects a wide range of camcorder vibration for virtually shake-free images...  read more »

Would You Return a Lost Cell Phone or Camera to Its Owner?

Last weekend I was out with my girlfriend and I happen to come across a lost cell phone on the street. She told me to just leave it, but my gadget intuition kicked in, and I couldn't help but take it home and attempt to reunite it with its owner. It was late when I got home, but I called the last three numbers on the recent calls list. I didn't seem to have much luck so I decided to wait, hoping that the owner would realize his phone was missing and call it. Sure thing he called in the wee hours of the morning. We ended up meeting the next day and he was overjoyed that someone would take the time and effort to return his phone to him he had expected it to be stolen or filled with expensive calls to China! I guess I consider losing my cell phone just as serious as losing my wallet because its filled with important data, numbers, and photos. And I would only hope that someone would do the same for me if they found my phone. A young couple in NYC recently spent ten days trying to reunite a Canon camera with its owner , which was left in a taxi cab. After reading clues from the photos and videos on the camera, the couple was able to slowly unravel the mystery and return the camera back to its owner, who lived in Sydney. I'd like to think this is a growing trend, but then again, it's not every day you hear stories like this. What do you think? Would you try to return a lost cell phone or camera back to its owner? Canon EOS Rebel XSi

EOS.jpg

I've been really digging the latest in digital cameras these days, and shutterbugs ought to get a load of the EOS Rebel XSi from Canon.

This particular camera is designed with the point-and-shooter in mind as it has a 12.2 megapixel CMOS Sensor. It also has a 3 inch LCD monitor, and is compatible with SD and SDHC Memory cards with other new accessories. Other features include an integrated cleaning system, a live view function, as well as a powerful DIGIC III Image Processor.

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi is planned to be available in April 2008. So far, there is no word on a price.

Canon IXUS 970 IS hits the market

canon-ixus-970-is.jpg Canon has a spanking new digital camera in town - the IXUS 970 IS. This 10 megapixel digital camera will boast the longest ever zoom lens in the range at 5x optical zoom, and is accompanied by an enhanced version of Canons lens-shift type optical Image Stabilizer (IS). Check out the exhaustive list of features right after the jump - while the camera might look pretty normal from outside, it is actually a heavyweight on the inside that makes it sound like a bridge between folks who want to make the jump from point and shoot cameras to something a little bit more serious.  read more »

Canon Printer Costs $280,000, Takes Up 33 Feet Of Wall Space, Is Ridiculous, Blocky, Complicated And Poorly Named

ridiculous-printer.jpg

The Canon ImagePRESS C7000VP has one of the lamest names for a printer ever. Why not the Canon Big F'er? Or maybe the Canon Baller?

The C7000VP requires 33 feet of wallspace and costs a shade over $280,000. It comes with a trimmer, finisher, inserter, stacker, binder, capacity for 10,000 sheets of paper, and can print 70 pages per minute at 1200 dpi. The internal computer is a dual core 3.0ghz Xeon with 2 gigs of ram and a couple raided 80gb HDs.

Wow. I paid $160 for my printer and it takes up one-cubic-foot of space on a stack of books next to my desk. Obviously mine wasn't made for an office setting though. And apparently neither was the outfit I wore to work today. But I contest -- nowhere in the company's dresscode are assless chaps explicitly prohibited. I think my boss is just jealous he doesn't have junk in his trunk like I do. And by junk I mean remnants of toilet paper.  read more »
