Panasonic will be bringing together its two divisions in new product initiatives, with plasma video displays for cell phones being one of them while AT&T’s recently unveiled Mobile TV service being the other. Today, we shall look at the former, as the very word ‘plasma’ evokes a sense of wonder among buyers as they know this technology is superior to LCD displays in many aspects, albeit taxing the pockets a whole lot more. With Pioneer and Fujitsu already bowing out of the plasma business, it makes perfect sense for Panasonic to strive even harder to capture customers from those companies. It seems that Panasonic’s latest plan would be to include miniature plasma displays in future cell phones - something I look forward to with great anticipation. read more »

The MB86H60 has been slated for use in both TV sets as well as set-top-boxes (STBs), capable of supporting HDTV broadcasting in Europe, in addition to finding it being integrated in portable receivers. The IC used will be compliant with the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standard used in Europe and other regions, being fully capable of of MPEG-2 Main Profile/High Level complaint decoding as well as H.264/AVC High Profile/Level 4.0.
Let us get into the nitty gritty - the IC can support up to 1920 x 1080 interlace mode at 50 or 60fps and 1280 x 720 progressive mode at 50 or 60fps. Other supported modes also include 1440 x 1080i/50fps, 1440 x 1080i/60fps, 720 x 576i/50fps and 720 x 480i/60fps. The main processor used by the IC will be the ARM1176JZF-S, chugging along at 324MHz. Portable external hard drives are very handy indeed and with half a terabyte now available, they're like having a big fat PC in your pocket. Fujitsu has just announced a 500GB version of its portable 2.5in HandyDrive and then ruined it by trying to claim it's the "world's highest capacity 2.5-inch external hard disk drive (HDD)". Well, it's not alone and certainly not the first. Buffalo announced the 500GB MiniStation TurboUSB way back in February this year. I'm not even convinced that the HandyDrive is the smallest since the Buffalo offering seems to be a tad more pocket-friendly too. Apart from the marketing lies, er, 'innaccuracies', the HandyDrive is still a useful add-on. Weighing in at just 220g, it measures (D) 142 x (W) 82 x (H) 22 mm and costs around £182. There's also a 400GB version [and smaller capacity versions down to 160GB] - that costs a more reasonable £142. Pushing its suitability for laptop users, Fujitsu said that the drive reduces its power consumption in stand-by mode by 35% over normal idle mode. read more »
